It depends on the quality of the material, craftsmanship, and design!.
The material can be Brier, or meerschaum!. Both are really good and there are different grades of the materials!. Other materials have been used like corncob but they aren't lasting!. I've even seen a stainless pipe but the bowl gets too hot!.
Design and workmanship have the most to do with price since you can use an excellent material but turn out an atrocious pipe!.
If you think of a pipe as an investment, it's a lot easier to see the differences in the high end models!. Some are absolute works of art!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The expsensive pipes are often made of rare woods and are carved and polished entirely by hand!. That's not to say a $20 pipe won't smoke just fine though!.
