I feel 100% certain that this trend was started by someone who hates the taste of vermouth, but loved the "coolness" factor of a drink in a martini glass!.
FWIW, every non-standard martini recipe I've run across still uses a base of primarily vodka or gin!.!.!.so at least cocktails with other primary alcohols apparently don't get the martini name!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Venting a bit today Mayor!.!.!.lol
I don't know who started the trend!.!.!.I too am a purist and you wouldn't catch me drinking any martini that isn't a traditional Gin or Vodka martini (preferably the Vesper, of course)!. However, since I work behind the bar, I will make whatever fruity "tini" the customer asks me to make to the best of my ability!.
Sheeet, the bar I currently work at has a martini list too, and some of those f'in things take a good 2-3 minutes to make and serve!. The Double Chocolate Mocha Martini!.!.!.is quite ridiculous (chocolate chips, chocolate sprinkles, Hershey syrup, and whip cream garnishes, plus the Kahlua, Bailey's, Dark Creme de Cacao, and Half&Half for the drink!.!.!.) , but if someone sees me making it, they better be tipping me well!. But I ain't drinking the damn thing!.
We also have a Banana one too!.!.!. don't even get me started on how much I hate the Graham Cracker crumb rimmed martini glass!. I go through a bottle of Creme de Banana and a box of graham crackers every couple weeks because of that one!.
I bet the trend was started by money grubbing club owners bent on expanding the martini list for expensive after dinner drinks to make a bunch of extra cash!.!.!.plus making it difficult for the bartender!. Good thing most people who order those things are rich and tip me well!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I could never come up with a valid reason for it but I'm in full agreeance that it's a bit out of control these days!. It's a bit outrageous when I go to order a Manhattan (top 5 favorite drink for me) and get some bubbly bar tender in a giggle fit calling it a MANtini as if they are the paragon for humorous libation related word play!.
Jason's answer strikes me as a pretty valid theory!.
Personally I've always blamed the Appletini and/or Sex and the City, perhaps for no reason other than shameless finger pointing!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Gin OR Vodka!? Rubbish!. If you like vodka martini's you shouldn't be drinking them at all!. If you like it with a dash or a drop of vermouth, just order the damn gin in shots, vermouth is an essential part of a martini!.
Thats why I like Manhattan; its non BASTARDIZED!. Vermouth and Angostura bitters are an intrinsic part of the drink, and its much more complex and wonderful!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
