I am thinking of going to school to start a career as a sommelier. Does anyone know if this is worth it? Is it!

Question: I am thinking of going to school to start a career as a sommelier!. Does anyone know if this is worth it!? Is it
a nasty business (high tunover in restaurants, fiercely competitive, low salary, etc!.)!? I am 38 years-old and currently working as a peace officer in a public library making $40,000/yr!. I enjoy excellent benefits and vacation time!. As much as I have a passion for wine I have grave doubts about taking this step!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
you seem to list a lot of negative things about being in the hospitality industry!. I have always been in the restuarant business!.I am a wine director for quite somtime now!.being a successful sommelier is just as much about dealing with people as it is with wine!. Of course there is the math part of tracking pouring cost, and designing wine lists and managing inventory, and making sure your company makes profit for the wine you purchase!. It is a tremendous amount of work, but its work that I find very rewarding!. The up side to the job is that I get to try some of the best wine in the world and the people who make them!. so,if you are serious about learning, pick a school that is recognized by the court of master sommeliers!. they will have courses for beginner, intermediate and master levels that can be taken while you still earn a living at your current job!. if you get into the right restaurant ,you can easily surpass you current earnings!. Cheers! and good luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com

New knowledge is always a good idea - noone can take away what you know :)

So I think it's an excellent idea!
You'll probably have a head start, because of your interest in wine - and even if you one day decide not to work as a sommelier, you'll still have the knowledge, which can be put to use in other ways!. Perhaps as a winebroker or you can open your own business, importing wine!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
