Question: I am over 21 and I recently went into a liquor Store to buy wine but they wouldn't sell it to me because!?
my friend didn't have her ID on her!. I dont think that's a law in NJ so I'm wondering if they can turn me away!. It's not like she was buying it!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

What kind of society is that!? They send 18 year kids to die for oil, they let them drive from 16, the youth is full of guns and drugs but they refuse to a 21 year old man to buy a bottle of wine or a pack of cigarettes!.
How the land of the freedom became like that!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

In general, private businesses have the right to refuse service to any patron except when on the basis of race, ethnicity, or religious belief!.

I've always been baby-faced, and have had some weird experiences myself when purchasing alcohol!.
I'm from NY, and once when I was trying to buy some beer right over the border of CT, I was refused on the basis that they do not accept out of state ID's!.
Does this mean that nobody from anywhere other than CT can purchase alcohol in the state!? Further, I provided military identification, and was still denied!.

Clearly the problem was not my ID, but rather some other factor that they did not care to share with me!. The moral of the story is, any private business can refuse service on almost any grounds, provided they do not include race/ethnicity!.

The fact that you were with somebody who didn't have ID would appear to be a lawful reason to deny you service because it did not discriminate against you on constitutionally protected grounds!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes they can because as a business they have the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason!. There reason is you could be buying it for her and they would be in trouble if she was caught!. Along with you!. But each store is different the next one might not but next time leave her in the car!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Every store has the right to refuse your business!. The same thing goes on here in CT!. Everyone present must be 21 or older!. Heck once they turned me and my fiance away because she left her ID in my car!.!.!.and we are 26!. Just to save you the headache, next time you go in, make sure everyone around you is 21!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

When you go with someone else they may ask for both id's if the person looks underage!. Anytime me and my fiancee go to get beer, liqour, or anything of that short they always ask for my id!. They have to make sure you are not getting it for a minor too!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

They assume that the person with you is going to drink it too and they can't sell it to you with someone under 21 with you!. If you have a friend that is under 21 or doesn't have their ID then they should wait outside or in the car!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Happens all the time!. The assumption is that if you are purchasing it with your underage friend, you might be purchasing it for your underage friend!. It's the store's way of covering their butts!. Next time, make your friend stay in the car!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

They probably thought you were buying to consume with her which might raise liability issues!. Leave your friend outside next time!. they can turn you away for just about any reason - the 'we reserve the right to deny service' clause!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

they proubly thought you were buying for themWww@FoodAQ@Com

Generally if I'm buying a lot of stuff with a couple friends the store will card everyone present!. I don't run into this issue if it's just a 6 pack or a bottle of wine!. But I've loaded up shopping carts with beer, vodka, and rum, and sure enough before even ringing up the sale they wanted all 4 of our IDs!.

It is also law in every state (as far as I know) that minors cannot even touch a single bottle in the store!. If they noticed your friend touched a bottle then they need to card your friend!.

Even if your friend was 21+, not having an ID makes that impossible for the store to verify!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
