Short answer, the English are brilliant and name their beer completely appropriately!. Bitter is bitter, mild is mild, a nut brown ale is a little rich and nutty, stout is rich and sometimes stronger!.!.!.
Lager is a little different though, it's generally what people think of when they think of beer generically!. Its taste can vary but usually it's relatively light, very light malt sweetness, light to mild "hopping", and an overall clean flavor profile!.
Hops are the bittering agent in beer and can have a wide variety of scents and flavors!. Generally in the case of lager you're looking more at clean bitterness and earthy tones from the hops!. In ales you tend to get more fruity and floral notes from the hops and the tendency is also to showcase the hops more so than you'd generally see in a lager!.
For my money I would have scored the bitter!. A proper English cask conditioned bitter is a fine thing indeed!.
EDIT:
Leffe and Hoegaarden are ales, not lagers!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I prefer bitters, or more specifically, ESB, or "extra special bitter"
I'm surprised your Dad didn't explain the styles, since he obviously knows!. Most beer afficianados love to discuss styles, and help neophytes learn!.

If you want to get more experienced just try diffrent beers whenever you get the opportunity and you will start to realise what type you prefer, you should have asked your dad to buy both hehe
Me personally, I take lager over bitter most of the time but sometimes i would get tired of lager and want something bitter with a bit more of a "bite" and after-tasteWww@FoodAQ@Com

"Bitburger" is a nice crisp German Pilsener (lager) but it would get kicked out of my fridge anytime to make room for some Fuller's ESB (Extra Special Bitter)
Bitters have so much more flavour and variety!Www@FoodAQ@Com
