Corks don't really seal very well, and are more a nostalgic item than anything else!. Corks allow in a few ml of air every year and allow OUT a few ml, so the wine slowly oxidizes and ages!. That's part of the reason wine is stored on its side, to limit the effect and keep the cork wet!.
The problem now is that people associate cork with good wines and there's a shortage!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Tradition and image!. The screw cap is actually a better seal, and many wineries are moving to it (esp in Australia, but also Bonnie Doon which makes quality wine in Cali)!. The problem in the US and Europe is stigma!. It is a sign of a cheep wine!.
Fun Fact!. Most Swiss wines are screw caps, and are outstanding, but very hard to find outside the mountain counrty since they drink up almost all of their small production!.
PS, most everyone elses answers proove my point!. People dont know about the screw cap!. This means better deals for those who do!Www@FoodAQ@Com
