Question about fermentation?!

Question: Question about fermentation!?
I've been reading about fermention alcohol at home!. If you make a mixture, put yeast in it, and let it ferment, then it turns into alcohol!. When it's done, can you drink it right away, or do you filter out the yeast!? What exactly do you do after its done fermenting if you don't distill it!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
What you're referring to is homemade wine or beer (what you end up with all depends on what you start with)!.
To start, you need water, yeast, and something for the yeast to eat (basically sugar plus nutrients)!.
The amount of alcohol you get depends on how much sugar you start with!.!.!.it's directly proportional, but too much will kill the yeast!.
When fermentation occurs, the yeast eats the sugar, and alcohol and CO2 (yeast pee and yeast farts, essentially) are the by-products
When it's done, the yeast eventually settles to the bottom of the container it's fermenting in (called "flocculation") along with any solids suspended in your brew!.
After the yeast settles, you siphon the brew into a new container (this is what "racking" is) so that only the clear brew is moved and the stuff that's on the bottom is left behind!.
To drink your brew, you want it to be as clear as possible (the yeast doesn't taste that good) so you may need to rack more than once and let it rest for a while (weeks/months, it all depends) before drinking!.

What you make depends on what you start with!. Beer is made from grains that have been converted to sugar (in a process called "mashing")!. Wine is grape juice (or any fruit juice) that's fermented!.!.!.although apples make hard cider!. If you concentrated the apple juice to raise the sugar content, it could be called "apple wine" in the end!.

Do a google search for "home brewing" and "home wine making" and you'll get tons more detailed information than you'll get here!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It is ok to drink right away, but you wont like it!. You want to continually rack the alcohol off the yeast (transferring it to another vessel with a tube away from the yeast on the bottom) but you may be able to figure out a home made way to filter it!. I will tell you this, home made filters can get messy!.
Normally after racking, wine is aged in barrel and bottle, while beer is bottled and sent for consumption!. Only spirits are distilled, many of which are also barrel aged!. So it realy depends on what you want to make!.
Very important - you must be very sanitary prior to starting your fermentation!. Only a few cells of bacteria getting in your fermenter can grow and ruin the whole thing!. Normally the yeast will continue fermenting, kill the bacteria, and make it safe, but the nasty flavors will still be there!. Beer, which includes a lot of boiling, may make this easier!.
Dont let the setbacks get you down though, home brewing is an art, a science, is always fun, and you get to drink in the end!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The key to this is time!.

The yeast will do it's thing, and die!. All the bacteria bugs are on the bottom!. What you have to do is screen and filter out the good alcohol and dispose off the scummy stuff on the bottom!. Best way to do this is take out all but the last bit of your batch and pour it out!.

Just leave it to do it's thing, make sure you have a good vent for the pressure but at the same time, the batch is sealed from the outside air, let the foam settle and the yeast settle to the bottom!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

let's look at your question:

Moonshine: you know the term but do you know what it is!? Moonshine is nothing more than raw wiskey!. The difference between good whiskey and moonshine, is moonshine is not a well filtered, aged, or cleaned alcohol!.!.!.so it tastes harsh!.

Once the stuff has become alcohol it depends on what you are after!. Beer once created, needs to be consumed soon!.!.!.hense the "born on dating" as beer loses freshness as soon as it is done brewing!.!. however wine is better aged!.!.!.as is Whiskey!.
It really depends on what you are making as to the next step!.!.!.

The yeast can be filtered or not filtered!. An Australian beer, Coopers pale ale has the yeast in the bottle, they call it the feathers, and you don't ruffle the feathers!.!.!.

It really depends upon what you are after!.!. !.if you really want to learn how to brew, do some research on the web!.!.!. it really is easy and a lot of fun!.!.!. i bew my own and have for years!.!.!. I think like wine we too improve with age!.

hope it helps, and if you need help getting started!.!. let me know!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
