The world isn't "running out"!.!.!. we are just in a shortage at the moment!. Unfortunately, the shortage is expect to last for one or two more years!.!.!. I doubt we'll see a reduction in costs on the consumer end when it is over!.
For the record!.!.!. We are in a hops shortage, but it has mostly been blown out of proportion by the media!. There are still plenty of hops varieties out there!.!.!. just maybe not the ones we're used to!. As far as the big breweries go!.!.!. their jacking up their prices because of a shortage is complete BS!. A-B, Miller, Molson-Coors!.!.!. and the like have their own private growers, who have a quota for the year!. They purchase little if any hops on the open market!.
For the record part 2!.!.!. The use of hops as a bittering agent is actual a relatively new idea!. "Traditional" brewing was actually done with different herbs and grasses!. Some craft brewers are experimenting with the more traditional methods right now!.
Part 3!.!.!. There is at least one hops sharing programs out there right now!. The first and largest that I know of was started by Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Running out!? No! It's not like the plants are dying out or anything like that!. We're simply in a shortage due to a few organic & weather issues during the last growing cycle coupled with a major fire at a West coast hop warehouse!. We need to wait a crop cycle or two and we'll be in better shape again!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
No!.All the fields I've seen look great this year!.The hops I am growing in my yard are doing wonderful!.I was at the beer supply store this past week and they had at least 12 different kinds of pellets,and 10 loose hops,and 3 different plugs!.Besides if everyone grew some in their yards we would never have a shortage!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
