Brandy (derived from brandywine, from Dutch brandewijn—'burnt wine') is a spirit produced by means of distilling wine, the wine having first been produced by means of fermenting grapes!. Brandy contains 40%–60% alcohol by volume and is normally consumed as an after-dinner drink!. It is generally coloured with caramel colouring to imitate the effect of long aging in wooden casks!.

In a nutshell, wine is fermented fruit juice, most commonly grapes!. Brandy is distilled wine!. Most brandies are then diluted a bit with water as distilled brandy is very high in alcohol!. The defining characteristic in Brandy is the use of fruit wines, usually grape, rather than grains, which results in whiskey!. Brandy making is essentially a continuation of wine making!. Most marketed brandies use very different wines than those you find on store shelves!. In brandy making, neutral flavors and high acids are favored!.

The most famous brandy is Cognac, which is named after the area in France where it is made with very tight controls on production methods!. Many countries have their own versions of brandy, like Pisco in Peru and Chile!.

Pomace Brandy is made from distilling the leftovers of winemaking (the dregs or pomace)!. Grappa in Italy and Marc in France are the most famous!. Grappa used to be really nasty because it was made from any pomace, but recently, some producers have been making a more drinkable version (although I think it's still nasty) using better distillation processes and more selective pomace!. I like Marc, particularly the ones made in Chablis!.

Brandy is simply a stronger alcohol!. Its made of mashed fruits and not always grapes!. Its made from distilling wine!. But when it ages it will lose its potency!. Wine on the other hand is aged without being distilled and develops a nicer taste with age!. Brandy can be 40% alcohol whereas wine is usually in the 7-10 %!.
