First thing to know: don't buy Bacardi or Smirnoff, or any heavily advertised spirits!. The quality is no better than the others on the shelf beside them, but they're higher-priced (because they have to pay for all that advertising)!.
Everyone finds what's to their taste, so start there: what drink tastes do you already like!? Most people mix rum with either cola or fruit juice, and vodka with either tonic water or fruit juice!. But definitely try them with your fave tastes!. I like rum in coffee, for example, and vodka in apple juice!. Many folks like to sip dark rum straight or on ice or with an equal volume of water, like whiskey!.
And your shot glass is just for measuring out the liquor, so you get a constant amount in your drinking glass!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You can mix rum and vodka with pretty much anything!. As for buying the cheap stuff be warned there is a taste difference that is not as favorable as the name brand ones!. As for rum I like to drink it on the rocks or just to sip and vodka I like to mix with lime juice which is know as a Vodka Gimlet!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
rum and vodka go well with coke or sprite or ANY soda or juice you can think of!.

Best vodka drink is called a Gibson!. Shake 3 parts vodka to one part vermouth!. Strain into a chilled martini glass and add 3 cocktail onions!. YUM!

To start with, I would just put about a shot of liquor in with about 7-8 oz of soda/juice/energy drink!.
