Question: Can water "go off" or become stale!?
Like if I have a bottle with tap water in it and drink half of it and then put the lid on!. Is it safe to drink it after a few days!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Just remember if you are drinking from the bottle, heat will allow bacteria to grow!. if you store it in the refrigerator, you should be OK, but if the water has been left out in a warm environment, you are better off the throw it away, it is not a matter of it becoming stale, it is a matter of is it still safe to drink, because of bacteria and germs that have grown in the few days from your drinking it straight out of the bottle!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

After 36 hours of being in an unsealed bottle water will go stale because of the bacteria that accumulates in it!. Water goes stale even quicker in an open container!.

If you left the bottle in the fridge it would be fine!. You can usually tell if water is stale by looking at the bottom of the bottle/glass!. If you can see small pieces at the bottom, it is not safe to drink!. also if the water looks slightly cloudy it is not safe!. You can also tell if it is fresh or not by the smell and taste!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes, water can go bad if left for a while!.

Tap water harbors bacteria which multiply as time goes by!. The water which arrives at your home has been recently treated and purified to make it safe for human consumption!. Though it is likely fine to drink after a few days, it would be better if you were to immediately drink it!.

The main types of bacteria which have been discovered in tap water are:
E!. Coli
streptococcus
sulphur and iron bacteria

Even anti-biotic resistant strains of bacteria have been found in tap water!. http://www!.huntingtonnews!.net/local/0804!.!.!.

FYI, studies have shown that leaving the water running for a few seconds before you fill your glass with water decreases the number of bacteria in your glass, likely because some bacteria grow on the nozzle where the water comes out!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am a water snob, or so my friends tell me so!. Water tastes stale to me after a day once it's been exposed to air!. If it is in a glass it gets worse, but even if it is in a bottle, if it has been exposed to the air it tastes stale after a day or so!. It probably is safe to drink for quite a while but I don't like the taste so it doesn't get that far for me!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

if it is left open and exposed to sunlight it stagnates (all the oxygen leaves the water and it becomes stale and can become toxic courtesy of bacteria)

So yours should be fine

Fridges are cool AND dark for this reasonWww@FoodAQ@Com

I think it would be OK to drink but I wouldn't! Throw it away and next time put it in the refrigerator, then you will know for sure it is OK!Www@FoodAQ@Com
