Why does red wine cost more than white wine?!

Question: Why does red wine cost more than white wine!?
Answers:
The pricing of wine actually is a very complicated science!. It is more than just what people prefers!.

The cost of wine starts with the grape, which depends on the land that it is grown on as well as the yield of grape!. The more expensive the land, the more expensive the grape is!. Then, from the land, the vines are groomed to grow a certain amount of grapes by clipping the vine and growing in certain way!. As a result, the more the limited amount of grape produced, the more the vineyard and winery will charge their wine!.

Secondly, red wine grapes are fairly finicky and requires more care!. In addition, red wines are more complex in general, so the lack of complexity easily shows to a drinker!. White wines, in general, are fairly hardy and easier to grow, as well as not being so complex!. So, the growing condition favors cheaper cost of white wine over more expensive red wines!.

In addition, it has to do with the wine making!. Red wines usually requires new oak barrel to add the toasty oak flavor to the taste of the wine!. Red wines are also aged longer in barrels, adding to the cost of manufacturing!. White wine often can be made from used barrels and sometimes can be fermented and made in steel barrels!. In additoin, barrel time is less!.

Lastly, it has to do with the collectibility as well as the supply/demand!. What really drive the price of premium wine is the collectors!. What drives the cheaper wines are the consumers!. A winery can make lots of cheaper wines because of they can grown grape on cheaper ground and produce tremendous amount of grape, so a winery can make lots of money at cheaper cost!. On the other hand, for them to produce a very expensive bottle of premium wine, lots of wines will need to be used, and the winery will have to select the better, if not the best, of the grapes, then produce them with good oak barrels, etc!. So, the cost is high!. However, it is the premium wines that will bring the reputation for a winery (think Robert Mondavi vs Sutter Home)!. So, a good winery will spend more money making premium wine to keep the namesake!. The collectors will pay high amount for the premium wine, and many collectors tend to prefer red wine over white due to ability to cellar red wines much longer than white wines!. It is the collectors that are driving up the cost of premium wines!.

Having said all that, wineries tend to charge more for their red wine due to the cost as well as due to the higher profit margin of red wines!. While there are many expensive white wines, if you compare the red and white wines of the same winery, you will see that the winery charge higher cost of their red as compared to white!. There are exceptions, of course, (especially Bordeaux)!.

Here are some examples, Robert Mondavi Napa - White wines include Chardonnay ($15-18) and Fume Blanc ($12-15), Red wines include Cabernet ($25-28), Merlot ($20-25), Pinot Noir ($20-25); Pride - Cabernet ($70), Merlot ($65), Chardonnay ($45), Viogneir ($55), Reserve Cabernet ($125), Reserve Claret ($125); Far Niente - Chardonnay ($50-60), Cabernet ($80-120), Dolce White Dessert Wine ($60-70 for half bottle)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
