Can 40% alcohol freeze?!
My boyfriend drinks 12oz bottles of Canadian Club rye on occasion and stores the bottles in our fridge freezer!. Until now, it has NEVER froze!. It is 40% alcohol and we were always told that it cannot freeze, and it never has and he drinks it often enough!. Our freezer is very cold, but should it have frozen!?
It's not completely frozen, but very close!. Hard to pour a drink because it's like 99% slush!.
Has this happened to anyone!?

Alcohol freezes at -117 degrees Celcius!.!.!.-178 farehheit!. Not likely in your freezer!. I have had vodka in freezer, it does not freeze, just gets thicker like a syrupWww@FoodAQ@Com
40% alcohol can freeze in a home freezer if the sugar rate is high enough, however this is extremely rare!.
Every time I have found 40% alcohol frozen it was becuase some kid stole a few sips and replaced it with something else lower in alcohol (ie!. tea or water)!.
The other option is the bottle may have been left in a non-airtight way, in which case the humidity in the freezer would settle in the bottle of Canadian Club, thus reducing the alcohol content enough to freeze!.
Outside of this there is no normal way a 40% product in an airtight container can freeze in a normal freezer!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

While alcohol does freeze at a low temperature (-114C), it depends on the strength!. Remember the rest is water, freezing at 0C!. It's pretty easy to show that at 40% ethanol, the freezing point is ridiculously low for a home freezer!. In the below -40C area (-40C = -40F, btw)!.
The most likely thing is someone drank most of it and replaced it with water!. I'm sure once it thaws you could drink the whole thing and not taste it and have minimal effect!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
