Question: What's the difference between Champagne and Wine!? Are they similar!? Is white wine not really wine!? Thnx!.
Answers:
Champagne is wine that is fermented using different fermentation processes to produce bubbles (naturally)!.

White wine is definitely wine!. Red wine is made from mostly red grapes and is fermented with the grape skins!. White wine is made mostly from lighter colored grapes, and usually the skins are removed!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Count me on the wine for dummies train!. Read it about 12 years ago and I still refer to it!.

Perhaps the easiest way to understand the difference between wine and Champagne is to look at it like a target where the closer you get to the center, the more specific you get!.

On the outer ring is "Wine!." Wine itself actually refers to any fruit that is fermented (sugars converted to alcohol by yeast)!. Plum wine is just one of many examples not made of grapes!.

In the next inner circle, you find "Grape Wine"!. This is what most people associate as wine!. "Grape Wine" can refer to your everyday table red or white wine, ports, sparkling wines, etc!.

In the next circle, you find sparkling wine!. There are several ways to make sparkling wine with carbonization as the cheapest!. Several countries have robust sparkling wine industries, but these are not Champagne!.

In the last and most specific circle, you find Champagne!. According to EU laws (which are not followed by the US), to carry the label Champagne, a wine has to meet very strict guidelines!. It has to be made in the Champagne region in France, it has to have a very specific blend of grapes (Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the most well known), and it has to be made according to traditional methods!. There are other rules, but these are the most important!. The method is as follows:
1) The wine goes through regular fermentation!.
2) Sugar is added and yeast introduced to the wine just before bottling!. The bottle is sealed and the second fermentation causes bubbles to form!.
3) In order to remove the sediment created, the wine is chilled and the neck of the bottle is frozen!. The sediment is removed and the Champagne cork is inserted!.

Oversimplification, but I trust you see how this is much more than just pumping carbon gas into a wine!.

As a side note, anything specifically labeled as Champagne that is not from France is probably garbage!. Globally, any winery striving to make decent sparkling wines respects the EU laws!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you take wine, add sugar and yeast to it, the yeast will eat the sugar and convert it to carbon dioxide bubbles, making Champagne!. Champagne is just a bubbly wine!. There are all sorts of rules (like, a capital C in "Champagne" means its made in the Champagne region of France, and champgane made in America has to use a small c, an champagne made in Spain is called "cava," and so on), but don't worry about all that!.

White wine is wine!.

When you make wine with red grapes, you can squeeze the color out fo the grape skins to give the wine a red color!. Without the color from the skins all grape juice would be "white!." Look at a red or purple grape - the juice is almost clear!.

If you use yellow/green grapes, or don't squeeze the color out of the skin of the red grapes, you get white wine!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Champagne is made with grapes from the Champagne region of France!.!.!.and it's carbonated!. Any other "champagne" made outside this region is simply sparkling wine!. White wine is wine it's just made from green grapes or grapes without red skins generally, which is what give red wine it's color and tannins, the skin!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Wine for Dummies!. No I'm not making fun of you!. Just suggesting a read!.

Yes, white wine is really wine!. Contrary to popular thought not ALL white wine is made from white (or green if you can't conceptualize them as white) grapes!. Some is made from red grapes, but without the skins being left in the mix to color the wine!.

Other than that, red and white wines are made the same way!.

Champagne is a specific type of wine!. It's a sparkling (i!.e!. bubbly) wine!. Not all sparking wines are Champagne!. Champagne can only be labeled as such if it comes from the Champagne region of France!. Some sparkling wine makers put the word champagne on their labels, but legally they cannot use a capital "C" to do so because that is reserved for those from the aforementioned region of France!.

I don't recall the exact process for making sparkling wines effervesce (bubble)!. That will give you something to look forward to finding out when you read Wine for Dummies!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Champagne comes from France specifically where it's cold and the grapes have a hard time growing (thats why its expensive)

Wine is just squished, filtered fermented grapes!. White wine is just the fleshy inside rather than the skin!.
