Answers:
"Root" = Sassafras root!. There's also Ginger beer, made from ginger!.
"Beer" = the fermentation process, which is nearly identical to standard beer!.

The original recipes for root beer essentially use bark and roots from sassafras (they've since stopped using the bark, it contains some cancer causing chemicals) and fermented it with yeast to make a carbonated beverage!. This was filtered, sweetened with sugar and served as "sarsaparilla" or "root beer"!. There's never been much alcohol in it, early recipes I've seen on a few sites list less than 1% pretty consistently!.

Now they use pre-carbonated water and sassafras flavorings and sugar!. There's no alcohol in any major label root beer!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

it may just be because it just is, or it may have something to do with the root part, it could be that the "root beer" is made from roots that you make real beer out of but that the part of the root or that kind of root is not alcoholic!. is just like this sugar that they have now called "splenda" is made from sugar and taste like sugar, but is not sugar, interesting question though!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

From what I know, rootbeer is made from roots and brewed in a similar fashion to beer!. It does contain some alcohol, although only negligble amounts!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Because it's made from sasafras root!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
