you can do both!.
tequila shots were very popular at my student times and is still my husbands preferred method!. also supposed to be healthier as you don't add all those sweet things!.
My favourite was to put salt on your hand, down the shot of tequila, throw the salt over the left shoulder for good luck and throw the lemon slice after the bartender :-) Or the traditional is to down the tequila shot, lick the salt and eat the lemon slice!.
you can mix it with any mix or just mix it with sprite (which also makes for an excellent headbanger)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

With good tequila you can use both- however a homemade mix is best if you are going that route!. One recipe I like is the following:
3 parts sour mix (see below)
2 parts tequila
1 part orange liqour (cointreau or emular is my favorite)
Sour mix:
2 parts lime juice
2 parts simple syrup (1:1 sugar:water)
1 part lemon juice
1 part orange juice
PS- remember only use "100% de agave" !.!.!. the rest is fake tequilaWww@FoodAQ@Com

2!. half a glass full of lime juice, a shot of tequila in it and a little salt!.(a real good way to get rid of a cold quickly, but you might end up the next day w/ a hangover if u drink too many)
3!. tequila and any kinda juice!.
4!. poor mans margerita:
tequila, grapefruit juice, lime and salt!.

(6 parts) Orange juice
(1 part) Grenadine syrup

You can do either or!. Lots drink it straight, and those that its too strong for, drink it mixed with something and it takes off the edge if its harsh!. So if you are just starting out, maybe try it with orange juice!.!.!.!.!.mountain dew!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Genuine Tequila in Mexico is drunk as a shot, but there again its a lot stronger nye on raw alcohol and the reason of salt and lime first is probably once taken you'll drink anything including Tequila!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
