Bartending School is such a waste of money!
Everyone who is "thumbs-downing" my answer, has either wasted their money in attending a bartending school, owns a bartending school, or knows nothing about the food and beverage business!
Start by:
Cocktail waitressing in a bar!. Watch the bartender (if you have time)!. Ask the bartender questions!. He/She will be happy to give you all kinds of info!. When you're a bit more comfortable with the bar setting, ask to bartend!.
Reading up on basic drink recipes!. (NOTE: EVERY bar keeps a drink recipe file on hand, but it's good to know the basics)!.
Get to know your basic bar tools and how to use them!. (You can find this information in any 5!.00 bartending book --includes basic recipes)!.
Start out in a small bar ----not a fancy place!. You WILL learn as you go! A hotel bar is a geat place to start, even if you start out as a cocktail waitress ---great tips!
Many establishments do NOT want bartenders hired from Bartending School, as they are so rigidly trained and NOT what a REAL bar is looking for!. No matter how much you learn in bartending school, you'll still have to learn the rules and the drink standards of the bar you'll be working in!. Bartending School teaches you how to mix drinks ----you'll learn that in most bars! Why pay to learn when you can GET paid to learn!?!?!?!?
Bartending School does NOT teach any of the business aspects of actually working in a bar (money handling, bar rules, house traditions and set standards put in place by EACH bar)!.
You pay for Bartending School!. You can learn just as much and MORE, while actually working at a bar ----and YOU will get paid for working while learning!
I worked at a 5 diamond 5 star resort as a bartender!. As a rule - they refused new bartenders that came out of bartending schools ---again ---the bar/resort/nightclub, wants to teach you THEIR rules and "pour tactics" and bar ethics-------believe me!
I have worked in many bars: from beer n' wine joints, to "foo-foo" and Manhattan drink establishments!. EVERY bar, whether the local joint or the ritzy resort, prefers a NON-Bartender College bartender!. It's an utter waste of money! It's actually an inside joke among bartenders AND Bar managers!.!.!.!.!.!.they laugh at people who pay for bartending school, when they can get paid for the SAME THING by working their way up in ANY bar! If you want to pay for Bartending School, you are contributing to a scam!
Regarding your licence (certifications):
The BAR will pay for your classes! It's simply a food handler's certificate, and your "Serving Alcohol With Care" certificate required by the state health dept!.

You should definitely take a class to get your license and learn what you need to know!. Offers for these classes can be found online or often in the classified section of newspapers!.
Once you have your license, restaurants or bars looking for people usually put ads in classifieds as well, but sometimes its hard to get a job if you dont have experience!. As long as you have your license though, you should be able to find a job pretty quickly especially if you live in a city or near a college!. also if you're good with people and quick on your feet, employers will love you!Www@FoodAQ@Com

On the job training is the best look for a resturant or hotel that will train you , learn how to pour count get books and there you go my first bartending job i did not know a thimg but told them i did !Www@FoodAQ@Com
