Traditionally, beer is cheaper than hard liquor, making it a favorite with students and other budget conscious imbibers!. In the past there was 3-2 beer (or near beer, 3!.2% alcohol) available at a younger age than other alcohol, which also promoted a tradition of beer as an entry-level alcohol experience!.
There are a lot of social factors that override (or preclude) picking a drink on the basis of taste!. People adopt the tastes of their family or drinking peers to a large extent!. Certain beverages are associated with certain social classes -- look at the difference in the ads for Bud and Bacardi!. There is a worse social stigma to drinking "hard liquor", especially "white liquor" which is seen as not redeemable on the basis of taste!.
Before Prohibition, most Americans drank beer or wine!. But the profit to risk ratio for smugglers and bootleggers favored stronger drinks, which resulted in a shift of tastes toward these drinks!. Ironically, by lumping all alcohol consumption together, Prohibition also lessened the relative stigma of stronger drinks!.
