Answers:
Look out for a pub that features a sign in the window or on the wall outside saying 'We're in the Good Beer Guide' or 'Cask Marque'!. This is an indication that the beer is likely to be of good quality!. Inside the pub ignore any beers that comes out of a tap - these are almost always bland and gassy!. Ask for one from the 'hand pump'!. These pumps are very obvious on the bar - they look like upright poles!. You will find a huge variety of beers available!. Try a few at random - you will not like some, but others you almost certainly will!. It is pretty pointless giving a recommendation since everyone's tastes differ!. What I like you might not!. Most beers sold on these handpumps are called 'bitters'!. Some really are bitter because they taste strongly of hops!. Others are actually quite sweet!. Much rarer, but worth finding, are 'mild' 'stout' or 'porter'!. Other beers may not fit into any of these categories and will have another (quite possibly odd!) name!.
Common beers you will find in London are:

Fullers London Pride - Quite sweet tasting
Youngs Bitter or Special - More bitter!.
Greene King IPA - very ordinary
Adnams Bitter or Broadside - Very bitter and distinctive!.
Wells Bombardier - Medium bitter/sweet!.

There are lots and lots of others!
Try a 'Wetherspoon' pub!. They always sell a wide variety - and because they are so busy the beer is usually of good quality!. They will let you taste a small sample before you buy!.

Ale is defined by beer brewed with top fermenting yeasts at warmer temperatures!. What does this mean for real!? Nothing specific really!. Ale has probably the broadest flavor spectrum of any generic category of thing that has entered my mouth!. To be glib, you're looking at beers that taste like coffee and chocolate such as American Double Stouts to the nearly polar flavor opposite of something like a Belgian Gouze a beer aggressively sour from wild yeast and bacteria!.

Anyways, Japan my friend has some fine ales and an ever growing craft beer community!. Look in to the Kiuchi Brewery which makes the "Hitachino" line of beers, Rogue of America rebranded several of their beers and redistributed them to Japan, and I'm sure you have many others I have never been fortunate enough to try!.

My favorite English ale is Coniston's Bluebird Bitter XB but I don't know how common it actually is in England!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Favourite is entirely subjective - as much as saying what's your favourite Cheese, or Bread!.!.!.

Beer is an art, a science and passion represented in liquid form!. Not to mention the aspects of society, history, politics, and governance and revolution that effect the makeup of what we love to drink!.

If I were you, grab yourself a copy of the "London Drinker", make a trip to The Wenlock Arms near the Moorfield Eye hospital - and ask for Jon Pitcher, explain what you want to do, what you're looking for and they have a great selection of beers on traditional british style handpump on offer - I am sure that Jon will guide you through ably! great guy!

Then look out for beer festivals around the london area, go and have a day at a beer festival, then see if you can get a brewery tour somewhere!.!.!.

There is so much to beer! and you're just starting out - so enjoy the process and make some notes of what you like - there are 86,000+ beers in this world to try!.!.!.
