It depends on whether you mean:

1) no beer was present to purchase; or
2) beer was present but I was prevented from buying it

I will assume the former case!.

Supermarkets in Germany, in my experience, are traditionally stocked with fresh, high-quality beer although it is also common in some places to have the beer delivered the way the milkman might!.

My instinct is that the market in question carries smaller, more transportable, more economically "dense" products!. You could likely put 1000 Euros of liquor in your car but not 1000 Euros of beer!. If this is the case, the market would make more money by selling you carsfull (or cartsfull, or armsfull) of liquor rather than beer!.

BTW, many German beerstyles are quite accessible to the average homebrewer!. Weizens and other non-lagered styles are rather simple to do at home!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

The Germans have some of the best beer in the world, so you must be doing something wrong!. Their beer is generally wheat based rather than hop based, so is more like lager than bitter!. It's great, pretty cheap and good for avoiding hangovers too as it's largely free of chemicals!. Try going to Munich next month and not buying beer!Www@FoodAQ@Com

You must either be underage or mistakenly walking into supermarkets!. It's GERMANY! Surely, there must be some beer somewhere!.

Try this phrase:
Bitte wo kann ich etwas Bier erhalten!?
