For semi-sweet I would suggest a semi-sweet Riesling!. Riesling grapes are harvested at three different times in a season!. The first or early harvest produces a dry wine!. The second harvest produces a semi-sweet Riesling and the final harvest, where the grapes are left until they have acquired as much sugar as possible, produce the popular sweet Riesling!.
As far as books, my favorite is the Wine Bible by Karen MacNeil!. You can find at

If you are looking for a sweet red wine!. You can try a concord, this will taste a lot like grape juice!. Or there is always Lambrusco!. Lambrusco is commonly used in Sangria!. It is one of the few red wines that you drink chilled!. It is really sweet and delicious, also relatively inexpensive!Www@FoodAQ@Com
Pinot Grigio, try one from Oregon!. This is a light sweet wine!. Not as rich as a Reisling!. Which is also sweet and easy to drink if you haven't tried it!. Pinot Grigio is going to be more complex on the palate than a White Zinfandel!. Www@FoodAQ@Com
