you are right in saying that it is not a British drink, in actual fact, its a German one, however, it's just part of his act, he even drank on stage when we saw him!.
also, I'm not sure if you noticed this, but in the TV show of "Time Gentlemen Please", he sometimes drinks wine and speaks French if there is nobody around!.
