What is the difference between the taste of a gin martini and a vodka martini?!

Question: What is the difference between the taste of a gin martini and a vodka martini!?
I've never had either, but I was never a big fan of vodka!. (Too bland and harsh for me)!. How do martinis taste in general, and is there a big difference between a gin and vodka martini!?

I'm not a huge fan of sweet girly drinks either, but I also don't want a cocktail that tastes like straight-up burning alcohol!. If I order my martini "dirty," will the olive juice soften the edge, or will it just make the drink taste like seawater!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
I am a firm believer that the quality of any alcohol will make a huge difference in taste!. I drink martinis often (alright, VERY often) and like both gin and vodka!. I chose Bombay Sapphire gin and Grey Goose vodka!. Grey Goose will not have the harsh taste that you've had with other vodkas!. Gin is much more flavorful, powerful, and will dehydrate you much more than vodka!.
Dirty martinis taste like the olive juice you use, not salty!. It can take away a bit of the harshness from cheap booze!. Try olives stuffed with almonds, blue cheese, jalapenos, or garlic!. Sometimes we use pepperoccini peppers to "dirty up" our martinis!.
One of the best martini I have had is the Vesper, from James Bond's Casino Royal: 2 parts gin (he uses Gordon's, I use Bombay), 1 part vodka (I use Grey Goose) and 1/2 part Lillette!. Lillette is a French aperitifs, and may be hard to find - but you can get this made at any bar these days!.
We also do Caesar and/or Bloody Mary martinis - make in the shaker and strain into chilled glasses!. if you aren't a fan of sweet - try a Lemon Drop: muddle sliced lemons with sugar in a shaker, add vodka, shake, strain and serve - it may take a few trys to adjust the sugar, which may be half the fun! My latest concoction is to muddle 1/2 a lime with fresh mint in a shaker, add vodka, shake and strain into a glass and top with Lychee soda!.
Use quality ingredients, use ingredients that you like and play around!

well the obvious answer is that a gin martini tastes of gin while a vodka one has the almost flavorless alcohol taste of vodka!. All martinis will seem harse if you don't like straight booze because they basically are just straight booze, no mixer except a little vermouth which is a strong wine!. Gin has a number of herbal and spice flavors added so it is complex, perfumey and herbaceous!. But only if you get past the alcohol taste!.

And I have to comment that anything other than a traditional gin or vodka martini is NOT a martini!. Just because you put a girly drink in a martini glass does not make it a martini!. they may be good drinks, but they sure as hell aren't martinisWww@FoodAQ@Com

Gin has juniper berries in it and is a much more pronounced flavor than vodka, which is virtually tasteless, unless it's one of the flavored ones!. I had a gin martini once and thought I was going to die!.!.!.it took my breath away, it was so strong!! Bleah!. I'm not made for straight alcohol!. I don't know about the olive juice thing!.!.!.sounds unappetizing to me, but to each his or her own, I guess!.

Best martini I ever had was a chocolate martini made with vodka and chocolate liqueur and the rim of the glass was dipped in cocoa!. Delicious for dessert!Www@FoodAQ@Com
