Try Rioja!. you can get wine that is 6-7 years old for under a tenner in England!. That is what I usually buy because I like something that has been sitting around for a while and has developed some character!. For some reason, Spanish wines seem to be cheaper than their French/Italian counterparts but - at the cheaper end of the market - are at least as drinkable!. If you really want to save money, buy boxes of table wine!. These are usually perfectly agreeable and go a very long way!. You are also making a statement that you are not trying to impress your guests with fine wine!. After all, if you were trying to do this, you would be a fool with so many guests (or extremely rich)!. A box of basic "vin de table" as what the french would drink on such an occasion, an they know what they're doing!. You can get things called "Good Ordinary Claret" in British supermarkets!. With the money you save, you could buy a few bottles of Prosecco, Cava or some other cheap bubbly that people give out at weddings to give a real heady start to the evening!. "Cheap" does not mean "bad"!Www@FoodAQ@Com
If you are just looking to get hammered, wine in a box is probably a good choice (or anything sold by the 1/2 gallon)!. Be prepared for quite a headache the next day!.
If you are looking for halfway decent wine for a party I suggest many of the wines from Australia, or those from Washington State (Columbia Crest for example)!. These are commonly around $5!.50 to $6!.00 a bottle and are quite good!. Vendage is also decent and can be purchased as a double bottle for about $9!.00!. I have found that in the less expensive wines, merlot (red) or savignon blanc (white) is more forgiving, as is zinfindel (in-between)!. A poor quality cabernet (very dark red) or chardonnay (tart white) tend to taste rough, but a cheap vintage of the other tends to be more drinkable!. Cheers!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

My supermarket carries a brand called Tisdale!. It comes in a half a dozen varieties and costs $3 a bottle (sometimes goes on sale 2/$5)!. We've liked all the varieties we've tried, but Shiraz is our favorite red!.
If your budget is a little more liberal, look for Delicato brand wines!. They run $7-8 a bottle last I looked, have won many awards, and have a very good Shiraz!. Bon appetit!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
