You are experiencing a blow off!. The krausen is very high and getting into the air-lock!. Very active yeast and a strong fermentation going on!. It can be normal with high gravity beers, just use some sanitizer to clean up the mess right away, if left to dry it will be a sticky mess!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Clean out the airlock immediately!.When it foams like that solids can clog the airlock and Blow the whole airlock off the carboy and all over the walls and floors(past experience)!.Replace airlock and watch closely til the foaming begins to subside, which is usually within 72 hrs!. of pitching the yeast!.It sounds like you just put too much liquid into the carboy and didn't allow enough room for the foam!.I use a 6 1/2 gallon carboy for a 5 gallon batch or a 5 gallon carboy for a 4 gallon batch!.Good Luck!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

That's fine- it must be a high gravity beer or you have super strong yeast!. Regardless it's not a problem unless it smells like rotting vegetables!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
