Order "a Bud" and if they have wine tasting, don't worry about what that bucket is for!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
usually people who are newer to wine prefer white over red, but if you aren't sure which one you prefer or want to try both, just ask the server for a small taste of one that's by the glass, they're usually happy to let you try a sample!.
For my friends that aren't wine drinkers I usually go with:
WHITE-- gewurztraminer, pinot grigio, reisling (if you like sweet)
RED- Malbec, Valpolicella, Syrah, and Pinot Noir
all of these reds are pretty easy on the palate and go with just about anything, the whites are pretty middle of the road too-not too oakey or butteryWww@FoodAQ@Com

That would depend on what you like, white or red, sweet or dry and so on!. The easiest way to learn about wine is to start with what you think you may like and worry about everything else later!. If they have selections limited to a geographic area (Argentinian reds, Aussie wines, German whites) you could start with that!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Don't be afraid to ask your server for advise!. That's what they're there for and most would rather you ask for advise than pick something random that you may not like!. Basically tell him/her exactly what you've told us in your question!.
Personally, I like Riesling as a white wine option and Shiraz as a red!. Both are sweeter and milder than a Cabernet!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Dont be afraid to ask the sommeliers opinion!. Thats what he is there for!. Many folks at wine bars are not familiar with wines!. The best way to learn is to try some!. I'd start with whites if your munching on crackers and cheese!. Meat is for reds!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Explain to your server that you are new to wine and would like something that is relatively easy on the palate and appropriate for someone who is more familiar with beer!.

You can't go wrong with Kendall Jackson Chardonnay!. I'm sure you will like it!. As far as reds, try a Pinot Noir!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Give the wine that's in a box!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
I'd play it safe and just ask for Santa Marghereita Pinot Grigio (white wine)!. It's pretty smooth!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
