What is the difference between WANTING to drink and having to "HAVE TO" drink?!
Some say, "I drink because I want to drink!." But, in reality, some (I'm not saying all) drink because "they have to drink"!. They are unable to function without the substance and the alcohol effects!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

There are 2 kinds of addiction, physical and mental!. If you're physically addicted, when you stop doing the drug, it hurts, and you go through withdrawal!. If you're mentally addicted, you just really really want the effects of the drug, but when you stop taking it all you feel is the desire to take more!.
Alcohol is more of a mental addiction, however with hangovers it can feel like a physical addiction; you need to drink in the morning to cure the hangover from the previous evening!. In this way, it is very easy to become addicted to alcohol, and still think 'i drink because i want to drink'!.
I would say it is nearly impossible for someone to realize they're addicted until they've become a full fledged alcoholic, meaning drinking in excess at all hours of the day!.
I hope that answer helped!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, I personally know a recovered alcoholic!. He started by just drinking occasionally, and then in college he drank A LOT!. All through his 30's and 40's, he drank because he NEEDED the effect or else he would feel symptoms of withdrawal!. The need is addiction, in this case, alcoholism!. People can go out for a drink if they want to, but when they feel like they need to, then they probably need help!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you "want" to have a drink, then you (like most people) probably like the social aspects of drinking, it can be fun, it's tasty and also it relaxes you after a hard day - however, if you feel you "have to" have a drink, then that may be a hint that you may have a problem!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
The difference is between desire and compulsion!. When alcohol becomes a compulsion and the individual is entirely dependent on it to function in my opinion they become alcoholics!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
One is a desire, the other is symptomatic!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
