Beer/wine brewing question?!
I just got my hands on some used brewing equipment and among the items I got was a beer kit (malt kind) and a full wine kit!. But I was told the ktis were older and the yeast may not be good!. Is there anyway I can test to see if the yeast is ok!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
Most yeasts that are available in those kits last very long, just like the yeast you buy for baking has a shelf life!. Brewers yeast is easy to come by as is yeast for making wine!.
Actually you can test it!. Dissolve some in water and add some sugar to it, if it bubbles and starts to get a head on it, then you should be good to go!.
Before you make any wine or beer, make sure you clean, then sanitize your equipment!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Proof the yeast by dissolving it in some room-temperature water with a little of the malt sugar dissolved in it!. It should start bubbling in 30 minutes or so!. If not, the yeast is dead!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
well if you follow whatever instructions you have (or look up) and don't eventually see any bubbling, the yeast was no good, as no fermentation ever got startedWww@FoodAQ@Com
