Is it illegal for a 17-year-old to work in a pub and serve alcohol in the UK?!

Question: Is it illegal for a 17-year-old to work in a pub and serve alcohol in the UK!?
I used to work at a local pub in Gloucestershire part time until I was recently sacked because I went on holiday!. Anyway, a member of staff that still works there is only 17-years-old and she has been working there since the age of 16!. What are the laws regarding people aged under 18 serving alcoholic beverages!? The landlady knows she is 17 and I would like to know if she is willingly breaking the law and how I can report her!. The pub is owned by GREENE KING!. Many thanks!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Regardless whether it is a pub, social club, supermarket, off license it is illegal to employ anyone under 18 to sell alcohol!. The landlady should check as it is her responsibility not your friends!. Contact Greene King with the details below and let them know, (I got these from their website)!. She is probably using younger labour as she knows she can sack without reason, pay less etc and get away with it!. If staff are paid cash in hand you may want to shop her to inland revenue as well, then she really would be for it!.!. Revenge is a dish best serve cold!.!. good luck!!

When alcohol is served on its own, i!.e with no food involved (e!.g!. at the bar), any person under 18 must have permission (for that particular sale) from a licensee (or any other adult designated, as being allowed to give permission, by the licensee)!. The situation is similar to what happens in supermarkets when a check-out assistant, under 18 years old, sells alcohol!. He/she can do so, but must seek permission from an adult colleague!. (The store manager can't give 'blanket permission' to the young person!. Every sale has to be individually approved)!.

Yes it is law that you have to be 18,or over in order to sell alcohol!. Even supermarket staff are not allowed to checkout alcohol, they have to call an elder to put it through the check out!.
