Do drinkers now drink less "traditional" mixed drinks like martinis and "tom collins"?!
And instead drink more just whatever liquor plus some sort of soft drink as the mix!? I would think this is true!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Generally, I think you are probably right!. I know several people who prefer one of the traditional mixed drinks, but most people drink it straight or with a mixer like Coke!.
My husband is very fond of Rob Roys, and has those from time to time, but he usually orders a beer (we have a lot of microbreweries here, and there is some really glorious local beer on tap in restaurants), or a Rum and Coke!. I know one person who prefers a Martini, and another who prefers a Gibson, but other than that most people, myself included, drink shots or something with a soft drink mixer!. also, I know a lot of people who are really interested in wine, and trying to learn about good wines, so I know quite a few wine drinkers!.
One of my best friends was a bartender for about four years!. He did not attend bartending school first, he just learned on the fly!. He had a bar book with a ton of recipes, and in the entire time he tended bar, he said he literally made just a handful of the traditional drinks!.
I think people try to be fashionable, as well!. I actually prefer a Cuba Libre, which is a Rum and Coke with lime, and no one, when I order one, knows how to make it!. They do offer me Mojitos, though!. I tell them that if I liked mint, I'd ask for mint, and they have no clue what I am talking about!. But it's a really popular drink right now--I think some people think of alcohol as an accessory--it should be something you enjoy!. I know people who drink Appletinis (apple martinis) because they think it's "cool" to order them, or "sophisticated!." That cracks me up!. Ordering something you don't like to drink and paying $7 for it isn't sophisticated--it's stupid!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yes I'm a bartender and I have not made a tom collins in probably 3yrs!. People still order martinis but not as much as they did 4 or 5 years ago so I think that trend is dead!. Older people 40+ will stick with what they know but with the younger crowds its all vodka and redbull, shots, beers or coke mixers(jack and coke, cap and coke etc)!.
