How do you tell a fine wine from a so so wine?!

Question: How do you tell a fine wine from a so so wine!?
Answers:
I'll go with shywink's answers!. Legs, legs, legs!.!.!.oh my goodness, have not heard that in a while!. Okay, trust me on this, legs have nothing to do with the quality of the wine!. Used to be, you were suppose to be able to make a judgement on whether a wine was full bodied or light bodied based on the "legs!." But that's a whole another yahoo question (legs are irrelevant, actually, unless we're talking about a great set on the opposite sex)

Okay, so how do you tell!. There is no real, hard and fast rule!. A lot has to do with reputation and price!. When they first classified the great crus of Bordeaux, it was based on the going prices at the time!. Over time, reputaton and pride cemented a lot of those classification!.

For US and New World wines, look for Estate bottled wines!. Look for single vineyard wines!. Better wines, wines that carry a special pride with wineries will generally have much more detail on the label, right down to the plot of land the grapes came from!. So so wines have labels that have a more generic feel to!. The notable exception would be Opus One or Rubicon!.

Specificity is also true to Old World wines like the French!. The French use an Appellation Controlee system!. The more specific and defined AOC, the "better or finer" the wine!. You AOC Bordeaux, within Bordeaux you have AOC Medoc, within Medoc, you have AOC St!. Julian, as an example!. Nowaday, it doesn't go quite that way, it's close enough!.

Again, a lot has to do with price and reputation and pride!. For me though, I'm looking for information on the label!. With some exceptions, labels tell the story!.

I would recommend seeing your friendly, neigborhood wine proprietor, but be cautious!. Because, afterall, they have a vested interested in what you buy!.

Or check out Kevin Zraly's Windows of the World Wine Course!. Its an awesome book, easy read, will make you a wine geek! Then go see your friendly, neighborhood wine guy!.

Have someone else take a swig first!.

If he doesn't spit it out in disgust, then I guess it's a fine wine and not the so-so wine!. ;)Www@FoodAQ@Com
