I have no clue when it comes to wine. What is a good "dry" white and red wine to cook with? ?!
If anyone knows of specific brand names, not too expensive, please let me know!. It would be greatly appreciated!. Thanks!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Hello, an interesting question, one asked often on yahoo answers!. I'll go backwards!. An inexpensive, specific brand name!.!.!.I'll go with Carlo Rossi!. They have both a white (name Chablis-do not confuse with French Chablis) and a red (name Burgundy-again, do not confuse with French Burgundy)!.
Carlo Rossi makes decent, simple, "drinkable" wines!. If you're new to wines, sometimes, these are the best ones to start with!. You want decent acidity, softer tannins, and taste a touch of sweetness or fruit on the tongue!. Downside, Carlo Rossi comes in a 1!.5L jug!. Upside, its a screwtop, the wine should last a week or two, before you notice the taste going south!.
Your first question!. I have no clue either!. Why do people cook with wine!? Do this sometime!. Make a mushroom sauce!. Use a can of condensed cream of mushroom, 1/2 cup of milk and a 1/3 cup of white wine!. This will make a nice sauce!. Bake pork chops for an hour, covered, in the oven!. Pour the sauce over it and bake for another 1/2 hour!. Will come out nice!.
Then, remake the sauce, use 1/3 cup of chicken broth instead!. Tell me, there is a significant, discernible difference!.
I'm a wine geek and I'm not too sure cooking with wine makes a difference!. People also recommend deglazing with white wine!. You could deglaze with water or broth and it'll still work!.
Of course, if the meal is specifically wine based like coq au vin, then you would want to use a good wine!.
So, how do you get a clue!. I recommend 2 books!. Harvey Steiman's Essentials of Wine and Kevin Zraly's Windows of the World Wine Course!. Both books are great reads and guarantee you will have a more than a clue after digesting these books!.
Good Luck

There are so many!. One rule of thumb, however, is if it is good to drink it is good to cook with!. Many people try to get a cheaper wine to cook with thinking it doesn't make that big a difference!. It does!. I seldom cook with anything I wouldn't want to drink unless I just happen to have it lying around doing nothing!.
For meat dishes, Marsala is a great choice!. It works well with beef or lamb!. For the poultry or fish, a good quality French white does nicely as well!. I have no favorites for that but rather experiment with different ones!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
