Does absinthe make you hallucinate?!
Answers:
The amount of thujone, the supposed hallucinogenic in absinthe, is actually found in both the US and European versions!. The US version has a lower limit, but both versions of absinthe have such a low thujone content that nobody could ingest enough absinthe to reach the threshold of effect for thujone WITHOUT simultaneously drinking enough alcohol to be poisoned and die!.
What is really interesting is that surviving samples of 19th century absinthe have been tested, and even accounting for the amount of thujone which would have decayed over 120 years or so, they still found that the concentrations of thujone were not enough to provide any hallucinogenic effect without also killing the drinker from pure alcohol poisoning!.
I am not arguing thujone is a hallucinogenic, simply that absinthe -- of all types, modern US, modern European, and the stuff they banned in Europe at the turn of the 20th century -- has never had enough thujone to make anyone hallucinate!.
In actuality, the reason Absinthe was banned was the same reason the US has the mafia now!. That, of course, is a moral group of people who imposed their will on everyone else!. These people were known as prohibitionists!. When prohibition hit the US, drinking didn't stop it simply went underground!. Those who supplied the booze were the forerunners to our modern mafia that you find in every major city!. Absinthe was, and still is, over 120 proof!. It is one of the strongest drinks you could possibly have, and was the target of the prohibitionists!. It is very similar to gin in Britain in the 18th century (with the famous Gin Lane by Hogarth)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
