The history above is nice but pre-dates the term, "Microbrewery!."

http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Microbrewer!.!.!.
The term and trend originated in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s to describe the new generation of small breweries which had a focus on producing traditional cask ale!. Though originally used to reflect the size of the breweries it gradually came to reflect an alternative attitude and approach to brewing of flexibility, adaptability, experimentation and customer service!. The term and trend spread to the United States in the 1980s where it eventually was used to indicate a brewery that produces fewer than 15,000 barrels of beer annually!.

By this time the craft/microbrewery revolution in the USA had already taken hold!. The movement is credited to Fritz Maytag but Jack McAuliffe and Ken Grossman and Paul Camusi get some credit!.

I suppose the question can be taken two ways!. Microbrewery history in the USA and Microbrewery history in other countries!. Since I am an American-USA I know its' beer revolution/Microbrewery movement!.
And in that case the man credited with starting the Microbrewery movement in the USA is Jack (here is your "Jack") McAuliffe!. Here is a nice article about him!.

Going back in the movement a few years Fritz MAytag is credited with the USA's overall (or actual) movement in craft beers when he purchased the Anchor Brewing Co in the 1960's!.

If you are thinking about furthering the craft brewing craze in the 1980's then Ken Grossman and Paul Camusi founded the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co in Chico, CA!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Two Dutch immigrants, Adrian Block and Hans Christiansen, set up the first commercial brewery on Manhattan Island in what is now New York City in 1612!.

otherwise -

depending which country you are looking to, most European countries had what we call "micro-breweries" today, already in the middle ages!. brew-pubs were, and still are, quite common there!.

records to brewing beer date back to about 6000 (!!) years ago!. it's generally accepted that the Sumerians brewed beer first!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

His name is Jim Koch from Boston Beer, Samuel Adams founding it in 1985, though he seems to have been around longer!
