Answers:
just a marketing gimmick

you mean on Makers Mark in particular!?

edit: the wine capsules are also marketing gimmicks; the minor amount of respiration through a cork is desirable for longer-lived wines, and irrelevant for those meant to be drunk today (the oxygen binds with tannins to precipitate them out as solids, ie, sediment; alcohol evaporation is of no concern -- other else ALL alcohol would have similar accoutrements! moreover, few spirits even have corksWww@FoodAQ@Com

It's for keeping the alcohol from evaporating through and around the cork!. Wine bottles have metal "capsules" crimped onto the top of them for the same purpose!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

just for style!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
