This question gets asked a lot on Yahoo answers!. If you don't mind, I think I'll recycle one of my earlier answers to a similiar question!.
Good question!. With all the propaganda floating around, it can get confusing!. It confuses me I know!. The proposition basically began because "someone" noticed that the French had a very low incidence of cardiac deaths!. Considering all the butter and cheese the French consume, you would think the French would lead the universe in cardiac deaths!. Its the other way around - hence the term, "French Paradox!." Researchers looked at one possible explanation and that was the consumption of red wine!. They drink it (obviously), like 10 gallons a year per person!. Researchers found red wine lowers bad cholesterol, prevents blood clotting, and a few other thinks!. Researchers think it might have something to do with what’s in the skin of the grapes!. Some researchers say it might be an antioxidant called resveratrol in the skin of the grape!. Others suggest it might alcohol itself!. Some suggest tannins (but some French red wines like Beaujolais have very soft tannins), but its all still in question!.
And then, there’s the credibility issue raised when the ones pushing the issue are wine producers!. Man, when 60 Minutes did the show on the “French Paradox,” wine marketing firms when bananas!. Red wine consumption spiked in the US to crazy levels!. Then the beer industry jumped in and the German Wine Institutes started promoting the health benefits of white wines made from Reislings, etc!.
However, once all the smoke clears, even groups like the Mayo Clinic has stated that red wine, be it resveratol, or something else, does lower bad cholesterol!. But like aspirin, its low dosages over a long period of time!. Its one or 2 glasses with dinner most, every night!.
That's how I answered it earlier, so, what’s the bottomline, who knows!? Not me, I’m just a wine geek!. I’ll go with the Mayo Clinic, but you should do your own research and come to your own conclusion!.
As for the downside, becoming an alcoholic, although a glass a day should not push you too far over the edge!.
Hope this helps!.
Actually, I think I’ll have a glass, cheers!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
