First check your Welch's juice if there is any preservative this might kill the yeast, when you have dissolved your sugar make sure it has cooled well if it's to warm it will also kill the yeast, add the sugar syrup a little at a time, it's better if you worked with a wine hydrometer that way you will know if the sugar has been converted or not, as you can spoil the attempts to making your wine by making it sickly sweet!.
Did you measure the amount of yeast you added as if you put in to much this could account for the colour of your wine, also when you put the wine in the garage was this after the fermentation as cold will stop it fermenting!. Without seeing it and smelling it I can't tell for sure, I wish I could help more sorry!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Bread yeast should work, not the best, but you are already using welch's grape juice so there is no reason in being picky!. It is turning brown because of oxidation!. Make sure you have a one way valve system so it lets CO2 out and doesnt let O2 in!. You will also need to make sure everything is very sterile before you start your brew!. Clean all your tools with bleach or in boiling water if you cant get the official stuff locally!. I will be doing this with apple cider in a few days and posting my info to my blog, so stay tuned and we can work out some of these issues!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am an avid home wine maker!. First of all, Welch's Grape juice has potassium sorbate in it to retard fermentation!. It doesn't matter what kind of yeast you use, Welch's will not ferment and turn into wine!. My very first batch of home brewed wine, I used bread yeast!. Surprisingly, it didn't taste all that bad, especially after I'd let the wine age in the bottles for a year or so!. I recommend getting a book on wine making and there are plenty of resources online!. Start with fresh juice or juice concentrate, not store bought!. I get my stuff from www!.homewinery!.com!. Hope this helps!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
