For making alcohol you can technically use any kind of yeast!. However, if you want the product to taste any good you should probably use the proper type of yeast!. That being said, if you're distilling the product to make vodka then you can use any yeast!. The reason is that the distillation process will remove everything but the alcohol and some water; any bad taste as a result of the yeast used will be removed!. If, however, you're distilling to make something other than vodka you'll want to use the proper yeast!. Spirits other than vodka rely on the other substances for their taste so they're not distilled 100% and thus bad yeast taste will result in bad spirit taste!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

you CAN use bread yeast, but the problem is you won't get a reliable result!. the fermentation can be unpredictable!. You can get brewers yeast at most healthfood places, and there are tons of home brewing outlets with large selections in the UK, depending what you are going to brew, specific yeast might be best, wine yeast, ale yeast, lager yeast, etc!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Most distillers use only enough fermentable sugars in their mash to get about 6 to 8% alcohol!. Bakers yeast is quite capable of doing this!. If you were making beer or wine you would want to use the proper yeast since the flavor is important!. If I were making moonshine I would worry more about nutrients than the yeast!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
