Freeze distillation?!
so i heard you can distill spirits by brewing a homemade beer or wine and then leaving it in the freezer and throwing away any ice that forms!. because the alcohol won't freeze so the ice would be mostly water, and the liquid would be mostly alcohol, and if you do it enough it won't freeze anymore so it'll be regular 40 percent alcohol!.
but i heard it's illegal because it's distillation, and that it's dangerous because it concentrates the "bad alcohol" along with the regular alcohol!.
but all that stuff is already in the beer or wine or whatever you freeze!.
so why is it dangerous or illegal!? is there a difference between drinking the original beer and an equivalent amount of the freeze-distilled spirit!? and any tips from people who have done it before!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't think it is dangerous!.!.!. other than the fact that you end up with higher alcohol levels!.!.!. but it is supposedly illegal because of dumb left over laws from the prohibition era!.
Get this, it is legal to purchase and consume distilled spirits and it is legal to make home made wine!.!.!. but if you add distilled spirits (such as brandy) to home made wine you just broke the law and could go to jail!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

its illegal for 2 reasons
the minor one, when you get in higher % alcohol, it can become flammable, and in a few instances, people have started fires with their "bathtub gin"
the major one!. The US has a licensing and taxing program on hard liquor, which is tightly regulated!. if you make hard liquor yourself, you are bypassing the taxes you are supposed to pay, which the US government gets upset about, and sends the ATF knocking on your door!.
if you want to risk that, just think of Wako, that was mostly ATF guys knocking on their door!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Legal!? Who cares!? If you are brewing your own at home and then freeze it just how much of the stuff can you produce, not much!? You really only need to worry about ATF if you are selling the stuff!.
Unhealthy!? Only if you consume large amounts of it!. Again, in a practical sense you are not going to be doing that!.
Practical!? No!. The alcohol does not form in large pools as to easily separate from the water fraction!. It in fact is trapped inside the ice crystals!. So your lose much of it!.
Bad alcohol!? No there is no bad alcohol in beer, wine, or distilled spirits that you need to be worried about!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You can however, legally make 24% beer!. Check some of White Labs' yeasts!. (That's 48 proof booze!.) It's not exactly volcano beer (3 days and it's dully fermented - if it didn't paint your ceiling), but if you want strong and legal !.!.!. (Imagine what happens when you freeze the water out of that stuff!.)Www@FoodAQ@Com
