My friend drinks every so often!. He does not need a drink nor does he crave drinking!. But when he drinks, he just drinks so much and gets to the point that he blacks out!. He cant control his alcohol, however, we can go to dinner and he can have one or two and be done!. Its just so often he will drink and just get so wasted to the point were he is just a sloppy mess!. He has been to AA and just does not relate in any way!. Even people have told him that he is not an Alcoholic!. Is this possible!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

He may not be what most people consider an alcoholic, but he is definitely headed that way!.
Example: a "died" in the wool alcoholic will drink any thing he can get his hands on!. Cooking sherry, liquor, wine, beer, after shave, perfume, alcohol (the non drinking kind that can kill or blind you)!. They eat their livers up with strong drink and they drink on a daily basis!.
Some people start drinking on Friday nights and drink through Sunday nights!.
Responsible drinkers, limit the amount they take in to one or two at the most, of any drink and never drive if over their limit!. Really responsible drinkers, usually stay home and have one or two glasses of wine with a meal!.
If harder drinks are the norm, a responsible drinker, will drink at home, keys under lock and key with a spouse or friend!.
If you drink way more than you should, you are an alcoholic!. I have had people tell me that if you drink even one beer you are an alcoholic, that I do not believe to be true!.
Even in the Bible, Timothy was told to (drink a LITTLE wine, for his often infirmities) !.!.!.most likely indigestion or stomach aches of some sort!. The Bible also admonishes people to not be drunk with wine or strong drink, but to keep themselves sober!.
So there you have it from my "worldly view" as well as the Biblical view!.
If you friend keeps up what he is doing, he will become a true drunk/alcoholic and eventually will die from liver failure/jaundice of the liver!. Get him into a church that deals with such problems and AA won't hurt either!. But the church is a better idea; there are some how have excellent programs and helps for people who are addicted to various things such as strong drink, drugs and such!.
Will be praying for you and your friend to find such a church!. I have heard that there is a non denom called Calvary Chapels that you should look into; they have such programs I believe at their churchs around the world!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

An alcoholic is a person that engages in continued consumption of alcoholic beverages despite the health problems and negative social consequences it causes!. In other words, alcoholics have an addiction to alcohol!. It doesn't sound like your friend has an addiction, just that every now and then he gets a bit carried away!. I could see if your friend did this every day, morning, noon, and night for most of his life, then he would, in my opinion, be an alcoholic!. An alcoholic, can't just have "one or two and be done" as your friend does!. An alcoholic is an addict always searching for their next "fix" of alcohol!. They crave it, they live for it, that is the only thing on their mind!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
He is just having a good time, an alcoholic wakes up in the morning and opens a drink, an alcoholic feels the need to drink all the time and would not be able to go to dinner and have a couple they would not be able to stop at just 2 or 3, i think if he is with friends and has a good time and dosent find himself in trouble when he is wasted, then you have nothing to worry about!. He isnt an alcoholic!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Your friend needs to learn to control his drinking, it sounds like he is at the beginning of a very long struggle that lies ahead if he doesn't get his behavior on track!. I didn't feel that AA related to me in the beginning of my struggle because I hadn't reached my "bottom" quite yet!. This is called denial!. Before he gets to this point I suggest he find someone or a group to talk to!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
He is not an alcoholic!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
Your friend may or may not be an alcoholic depending on his level of dependence!. One out of thirteen people are alcoholics in the United States so it is very possible that your friend is already or will be an alcoholic in the near future!. His drinking does meet the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-IV definition for alcohol abuse because he continues to drink to the point that he blacks out despite the negative consequences associated with that behavior!. If he's been to AA he may think or fear that he is becoming an alcoholic or having signs of alcohol dependence which is defined by the APA as follows:
The maladaptive alcohol use with clinically significant impairment as manifested by at least three of the following within any one-year period: tolerance; withdrawal; taken in greater amounts or over longer time course than intended; desire or unsuccessful attempts to cut down or control use; great deal of time spent obtaining, using, or recovering from use; social, occupational, or recreational activities given up or reduced; continued use despite knowledge of physical or psychological sequelae!.
You could help your friend by testing his blood alcohol concentration over time with an FDA approved consumer electronic breathalyzer!. New advancements in technology now enable one to track their blood alcohol content (BAC) over time and estimate their respective average metabolic rate for alcohol!.
Alcohlics or heavy drinkers tend to have higher metabolic rates for metabolizing alcohol and thus have to drink more alcohol to maintain its respective intoxicating effects!. If your friend's average metabolic rate is greater than 0!.020 [mg/dL]/hour (top 20%) he's more likely to be alcoholic!.
