How long can I store wine with a cork upright without cork failure?!
Answers:
An interesting question!. I think for the most part, folks will tell you to store all wines on its side to keep the cork moist and swollen at all times!. That said, I think most wineries proabably use corks that are a bit bigger than the actual openings!. My guess is that most wines can go a year, if not 2 without significant issues!.
Frankly, the vast majority of wines can be drunk upon release!. And while some of the wine shops display their wines on horizontal racks, most supermarkets and bigger liquor stores display them upright!. And those bottles can be there for a while!. I think most wineries actually prefer their labels while consumers can easily see and read them!. Hence, make the corks accordingly!.
Lastly, cork shrinking and corks going bad just isn't as big an issue as it was a hundred years ago!. With modern technology and precision cutting, a bottle is going to have a very tight fit to begin!.
A long way of saying, my guess, a year or two!. If you are going to hold wine for a long period, though, never hurts to be on the safe side!. Lay 'em
Hope this helps!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No one can answer this for you!. Cork is a natural product (I assume you are talking about natural cork)!. Thus each one has different pore qualities!. If you have ever watched bottles being corked, you will notice that the cork is more than twice as big before insertion!. So the pores are squeezed and condensed to the point of sometimes non-existence!. So in some cases it may last for years before the cork drys out to the point of air leakage!. In other cases months!. A store can store them on the shelves upright because they do not stay there that long!. To make sure that your wines stay safe while storing, always lay them down or at least tilt them enough to keep the wine in contact with the cork in order to keep it wet!.
If it is a fake cork or Stelvin enclosure (screw top) don't worry bout it!.
Open wine is another matter!.
When I was merchandise director at Wine!.com I ran some tests to see which way preserved open wine the longest!. BTW, refrigeration will get you a little extra time added onto these results!.
1) open wine with no outside help- 1 day!.
When you first open wine, air is your friend!. It 'opens up' the wine and improves the flavor by allowing you to enjoy all the nuances!. After a day (sometimes less), air is your enemy and the wine start it's journey to becoming vinegar!.
2) Vacuum- this will get you 3 or 4 extra days!.
3) Argon gas- this will get you maybe a week!.
4) Using a smaller container with no space for air or gas- This is the big winner!. I have gotten a month from this strategy!. I have not tested for more than a month but have heard stories from people who claim several months!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
