21 And Cannot Buy Alcohol?!

Question: 21 And Cannot Buy Alcohol!?
So I just turned 21 and wanted to use my new power!. I went up to a quickie mart and tried to buy a couple six packs of beer!. The lady at the counter rejects me because I still have the red bars on my license that say "under 21 until 10/26/08!."

I complained and said that it is still valid and proof that I am 21 but she brought my attention to a homemade looking sign that said "No alcohol sales to licenses with red bars!."

I live on a college campus in Illinois!. Is this something that they are allowed to do!? I went to another place down the street and had no problems!. Let me know, thanks!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The same thing happened to an ex of mine when we went out for dinner and a drink once!. Extremely frustrating!.

As one person mentioned, a business can refuse you service for just about any reason (although I might argue that this situation is age discrimination!.!.!.)!. If they don't want to sell you the liquor, then that's their loss of business, I wouldn't fret too much!. also you might want to go ahead and get the license renewed a bit early just to avoid any recurrences of the problem!.

I don't understand the argument that perhaps that is to prevent fake ID's!.!.!.wouldn't someone getting a fake ID get one without the "Not 21 until --" on it!? Perhaps I'm missing something, but that seems silly!.

While I'm here I'll encourage you to use your new powers for good beer!. Get yourself a sampler of different styles if you can (stout, porter, pale, etc!.)!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

it was probably just her being a pain in the ***!.

i guess tshe had to do it because of the sign, but come on now, you are already 21 now so she sould have just cutted you some slack!.

if you want i will come from nyc to campus, and you can take me to that quickie mart that you went to with that lady and i will give her a piece of my mind!. and with me, i just turned 27 this summer and i still look like a teen, so i would mess with her mind!.!.lolWww@FoodAQ@Com

Typically a license expires when you turn 21 which forces you to get a renewed license that would not have the bars anyway!. Make sure your license isn't up for renewal!. Otherwise, I would contact your local police and ask if there is a policy!. Even campus police would be able to tell you if what she is doing is "allowed"!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

When I turned 21, I had a temporary license that had all the information but since I was awaiting my permanent license, I was not allowed to purchase beer because I did not have a picture!. The clerk said no picture, no booze!. Another store looked at my birth date on the license and sold me the beer because I was over 21!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The store has probably seen too many fake ID's and therefore made it a policy!. Go to the DMV and get a new one!. It's a few extra bucks, but it's worth it!. Or just keep your DL and get a state ID and use that!. Trust me, I went through this too in Iowa!. I looked young for my age!. I still get carded almost 20 years later now!. And if you change your hair or style or weight, get a new ID for that too!. They look for anything to deny you, otherwise they have to pay fines!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

she was just being a b!tch!. i got crap today for having a protective, yet removable laminate on my "21" license at a liquor store, but then went to 2 other stores & they had no problem w/ it!. some people like busting other people's chops!.!.!.that's all!.

j!.i!.c!. find out what the state & town laws are around there though!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I live in Illinois too and am 28!. I recently got turned down by a place using my passport! Is that not the best identification a civilian can hold!?!?!? Some people are just idiots and don't know how to do their jobs!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

They are under no legal obligation to sell you anything, let alone alcohol!. Even if no sign is posted, any establishment can refuse service to anyone for any reason!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

a lot os stores will not sell to you if the underage marker is on your license no matter if you are old enough or not!. it is a way to keep there business safe!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I totally understand your wanting to buy on your birthday but you have to remember that the person selling is responsible for the laws if they are fined they can be fired and most people these days need he jobs they have!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Well, you could start by getting a new license like you're supposed to, then you wouldn't have that problem!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
