How long does an opened bottle of red wine last?!

Question: How long does an opened bottle of red wine last!?
I have about two glasses left in it and I opened it Monday night!. Will it still be good tonight or even tomorrow!? I've had a bad experience with old wine once when I was a teenager and I really don't want to repeat that!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

One of my friends usually doesn't finish a bottle of wine!. She leaves it corked and puts it on a shelf next to the stove!. When she goes back to drink it, it is always soured and vinegar tasting!.

I've had a few unfinished bottles, and I always put the cork back in, tightly (I usually get it started by hand and then press the bottle against a wall to get the cork all the way in), and then stick the bottle in the refrigerator!. I've gone back to the wine 2 weeks later, and found it was still good!

That should work for you, but it also depends on how much is left!. The tricks to saving wine are you need to keep the temperature down because bacteria take longer to work at lower temperatures, you need to have as little air as possible since air will oxidize the wine turning it sour, and you need a good seal to prevent air from entering (this is actually worse than having air stuck in the bottle)!.

So, the fridge is the obvious choice!. Just take the bottle out 20 minutes before serving red wine and it'll be fine to drink!. Now, for something more than a week you would want to consider something a little better!. You can find 375mL bottles of wine in stores, usually ice wine or a mini champagne bottle!. If you have a spare one, you can simply clean it and then pour the remaining wine into the 375mL bottle!. If you then cork it tightly, this should keep for a while!. If you then store it in the fridge, I see no reason you shouldn't get a month out of it!. You could store it at room temperature if the wine is almost touching the cork!. For more exotic methods, you would need compressed gas, but basically if you were to store it with argon inside the bottle it would keep basically forever, probably longer than if you didn't open it!. (I'm only half-joking!.!.!.)Www@FoodAQ@Com

As a couple others said, 2-3 days is generally the rule and safety is not a concern but taste is!. If this is a cheaper bottle of wine - say less than $20 - it usually will only last a day after it's opened!. If it's a more expensive wine or is meant to be aged, you will often find it to be better the next day than when you opened it and to last a good 3 days!. After that, it usually starts getting vinegary though!. If you ever need help finishing a bottle, just let me know! :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

I actually find that open wine lasts a lot longer than 2-3 days!. But the safest thing to do is to give it a sniff and a taste!. If it's no longer good enough to drink, I would cook with it!.
P!.S!. Next time save yourself all this indecision and finish off the bottle during the meal for which it was opened
See!.!.!. Easy :-}!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would try to drink opened red wine within 2 days if left at room temperature!. You could put it in the fridge to extend the life a couple more days but make sure to pull it out a few hours before drinking!. Cold red wine is just not my cup of tea!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Oh, sure, it'll be fine for a week or more!. Keep dust out of the open bottle if you can't get the cork back in!.

If you're not sure, I'll come by and drink it for you, that's how helpful I can be!. ;-)Www@FoodAQ@Com

It depends on the wine, a good quality full bodied wine will keep for 4-5 days after opening so long as you reseal the bottle, some cheap wines will only keep for a few hours!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It'll be fine!. Pour it into your red meat dish, add some chestnut mushrooms, some mixed herbs, garlic and a cup of stock, and let simmer for an hour or so!.

Great way to use leftover wine - cooking!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I usually only give it about 2-3 days!. Smell it!. If it smells vinegary, I'd say that you passed the limit!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

The safety is not a problem for even months but the taste is only good for a day or 2Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you kept the cap on the wine will be ok till the last drop!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
