What makes homemade wine more powerful than store bought?!

Question: What makes homemade wine more powerful than store bought!?
Someone told me once that homemade wine will knock you on your bottom!. I don't know much about what goes into the making of it, but wondered is it the time it ferments or what!. Sorry for my ignorance, but you never learn if you never ask!. :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

Homemade wine isn't as well controlled as commercially made wine!. Some of the byproducts of fermentation (that you won't find in a commercial product) can put you under a lot faster than straight grain alcohol!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

As far as I'm aware, commercial wine you can go buy is generally 13!.5%ABV!. Some are higher, such as red zinfandel (I've seen this in the 15-17% range)!.

Homemade wine has the same problems facing commercial wineries, though!. You start with a boxed grape juice, generally add some sugar and yeast, and it will ferment (there's a lot more to it, but basically thats what you do)!.

Now, when you ferment homemade wine the yeast you use is important (just as it is to a commercial winery)!. Most yeast have trouble surviving in alcohol concentrations higher than 15%ABV!.

I don't see any real difference is alcoholic strength between homemade and store bought!. They're very close, and in homemade wine you are far more likely to end up with less than 13!.5% than you are to find a wine for sale with less than 13!.5%!.

One thing homemade wins at, though, is price!. You can generally make a bottle of wine for $2!. You can buy one for $8, but the homemade one will probably taste like a $12 wine!. So you can get 6 bottles of wine for the price of a store bought bottle!. Certainly 2 bottles of wine kick your butt more than one ;)Www@FoodAQ@Com

If they have the same alcohol content, they will have the same affect!. Some homemade wine probably just has a higher alcohol content than the average storebought stuff!. Www@FoodAQ@Com

In homemade wine the maker controls the level of fermentation and thus can exceed the percentage expected for a particular wine maufactured by industries, which have to abide by international laws!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

OMG homemade wine will get you so messed up!. drink lightlyWww@FoodAQ@Com
