Single Malt-Triple Digits?!
Some friends and I were kicking around how much we had ever paid for a single drink!. (not counting how much trouble we might have gotten into later) My claim to fame was twenty five dollars for a glass of scotch!. What goes into the making of single malt that makes it so expensive!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Akw is mostly right!. Single malt is more expensive than grain blends!. But even between single malts there are a lot of differences!. For example Maccallan only uses malt of "Golden Promise" variety, that is a variety that is less productive, but with more aroma!. This alone makes it more expensive!. Then there are the finishings!. You can take a single malt and put in a Bourbon barrel for 6 to 12 months to mature and get some Bourbon flavor- a bourbon barrel costs about $100- or you can put in a sherry or port barrel to take that flavor- one of those will cost about $900, and that adds to the value, then there are the special editions, and cask strength!. Single malt has about 60-70% alcohol content, and before bottling it's diluted in water!.A cask strength isn't diluted, therefore more expensive!. Special editions are even more expensive, like a twenties Maccallan for example!. It's a single malt made to duplicate the exact flavor of a 1920 single malt!. Or a 25 year old James Martin, that ages for 25 years at least!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
It comes down to the use of malted barley!. A lot of cheaper whiskies like the blends (eg!. Johnnie Walker Red/Black, Chivas, Famous Grouse, Ballantines etc!.!.!.) use more grain than malt!. The more expensive blends correspond to longer age and more malt to grain ratio!. Blenders like Johnnie Walker for example, buy grains and malts that have already been processed and aged by other distilleries and simply just put it together to create a blend!.!.!.no wonder there are so many single malt snobs out there, because they appreciate not only the taste of single malts, but the true value that goes into creating a whiskey from scratch!.
The process of creating a single malt actually accounts for about 2/3 of the total cost for distilleries, so thats why single malt whiskies tend to be a lot more expensive!. Throw in a famous distillery with a long history and some marketing, and you will also end up paying more money for the 'aesthetic' or 'perceived' value of single malts!.
