I'd recommend shopping at Beverages and More (or online at bevmo!.com), as grocery stores don't often have these!. Go to the Craft Brew section in BevMo!. I've listed brewery first, followed by the brew itself if I can recall them:

Ballast Point- Yellow Tail Pale, Black Marlin Porter, Calico Amber
Lost Coast Brewery
Pyramid- Hefeweizen
Rogue- Dead Guy Ale
Arrogant Bastard
Downtown Brown (can't recall brewery)
Steel Reserve (only if you want to screw with him, it's nasty stuff!)
Karl Strauss- Red Trolley
Stone Brewing
Gordon Biersch
Blue Moon
Anchor Steam
Sam Adams Specialty BrewsWww@FoodAQ@Com

Your availability will obviously be different than mine!. I can't get Goose Island or Fat Tire where I am (though I did see Goose Island is PA; I'm in MA)!.

In no particular order (though I have had all of these):

Stone - lots of good things here: Ruination IPA, Imperial Stout, Arrogant Bastard and Double Bastard
Rogue - also a top brewer: Chocolate Stout, Dead Guy (maibock), Double Dead Guy, Brutal Bitter, Shakespeare Stout
Victory - from PA: HopDevil, HopWallop, PrimaPils, Storm King (very good), Baltic Thunder (out of season)
Ommegang - Abbey Ale (American style Belgian)
Dogfish Head - pretty well known; 60 minute and 90 minute IPA are classics, Indian Brown is good; most of their seasonals aren't that great
Mayflower - Porter (hard to find outside of MA)
Harpoon - the IPA is the most popular but isn't really that good of an IPA; I like the Munich Dark a lot, and the 100 barrel + Leviathan series are pretty rare so there's also good to find (the current Baltic Porter is really good)
Troegs - Highly rated brewery from PA, flagship beer is the HopBack Amber (had it last night, pretty good); known for their Nugget Nectar (double IPA), Troegnator (double bock)
Sierra Nevada - pretty classic craft brewer here, the california equivelant of Sam Adams; flagship is the Pale Ale, but the Stout and Porter are also good as well as the Celebration and Harvest ales!.
Green Flash - had their Imperial IPA and thought it was great, but this their only beer that did NOT win an award!
Lost Abbey - very good; always sold in corked 750mL bottles
Ipswich - their IPA is very unique
Brooklyn - chocolate stout is great; Black Ops is hard to find
North Coast - Old Rasputin is great, Brather Thelonius is a Belgian style, pretty good
Flying Dog - Gonzo (imperial porter)
Founder's - their Breakfast Stout tastes like coffee

You should be able to find atleast a few of these!. Most of these are not well known in the US, so I imagine they're completly unheard of in other countries!.

FWIW, I have also heard great things about Russian River (but they do not distribute anywhere near MA), Three Floyds (limited distribution, best bet is to see if Archer's Liquors ships to your state; I would be happy to get a Dreadnaught IPA), and AleSmith!.

The last word I have is that, you should find out what your Italian friend likes!. Lots of what I listed are extreme styles, imperial stouts and double IPAs!. From what I've heard the Belgian beer makers are starting to make Belgian IPAs for export to the US because the Belgian market doesn't like such hoppy beers!. So you may find that your Italian friend doesn't like hoppy beers, so you should try to avoid the double IPAs!. Amber ales, porters and stouts should be enjoyable but you will want to get some variety in there so a pale ale or IPA may fit!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

From a page talking about how American beer doesn't suck anymore!.

Widmer Hefeweizen - 4!.7%
Lost Coast 8-Ball Stout - 5%
MacTarnahans Mac Frost Winter Ale - 6%
Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale - 6!.6%
Deschutes Jubelale - 6!.7%Www@FoodAQ@Com

I would include Alaska Pale Ale, and Sam AdamsWww@FoodAQ@Com

Visit pubcrawler!.com and see what local breweries there are in your area!. Buy some of those!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
