Should I take bartending classes?!

Question: Should I take bartending classes!?
I will be 21 in a month and a half!. I'm considering taking bartending classes which will cost $500!. This class will give you job placement for life and a certificate!. However, I'm only looking to become (possibly) a part-time bartender!. If not, I think it will be a cool and useful skill to have!. And in case I need a part-time job to fall back on in the future, it'll be a safety net!. Is $500 too much!? Would this be useful or a waste of money!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

I can honestly say from being in the biz for over 10 years now that a school is a BAD idea!. Get your foot in the door by your charm and personality, once you are there, the owner will tell you how they want you to bartend!. The basics are the same no matter where you go, so learn what the first place will teach you and you will know close to 90% of what everyone else wants out of you, with the exeption of the 'house' drinks!. Remember that anyone on here or even YouTube can tell you how to make a drink, but it is HOW you make that drink that makes the difference! GOOD LUCK!!Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you wanted to make bartending a career, it would be a good investment!. May even be for part timing!. However, if you're not doing it regularly, it's not really a useful skill to have, because you will forget everything you learned!. On top of that, there are new drinks and new names for old drinks all the time, so not only will you forget what you learned, but you'll get behind the time if you aren't out and making drinking for people on a regular basis!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Don't waste your money!. I work for a very large restaurant chain and all the bartenders that took that class where terrible!. It is a waste of time and money!. Your best bet is become a server or a bar-back somewhere!. Most of your big chains restaurants are willing to train server to become bartenders instead of hiring people who went to Bartending School!. This might take a few months before you can bartend!. The other option is find a pub and drink there all the time and maybe they will hire you!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

most bartending classes arn't worth the paper they give you with your "certification"

for $500, you are better off going and getting a good book for $5 at a bookstore, and then you could spend $495 worth of liquor and stock your bar!.!.!. practice, and maby have a few parties!.!.!. not only will you get practical experience, but you will probably become more popular than you are now!.

most bar tenders don't take these classes, and most have stated in the past they arn't worth it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Im a Professional Bartender!. I have worked on Cruiseliners and fine restaurants!. It doesnt matter if you went to bartending school really!. It wont get you the job!. Itll help you do your job well but not essential!. Take a Sommolier course!. Thats a profession!. Better money and notoriety and believe me thatll get you a job!. Im also and sommlier and thats my suggestion!. Wine is more fulfilling!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
