Freshness is very important!. Grind your own beans just before you make the coffee!. In fact, I actually roast my own, and it's much better!.
However you make the coffee, make sure everything is clean!. Old coffee grunge makes the coffee taste grungy!.
Some coffeemakers, including most drip-style makers, don't get the water hot enough!. It should be just under a boil, like 200 degrees!.
Generally speaking, the coffee should be in contact with the grounds for about 3 minutes!. Less than that and you get 'underextracted' coffee that tastes weak and misses some of the good flavors!. Over 3 minutes you get the bad flavors, the bitter and brackish tastes!.
The best way to make coffee is in a vac pot or a French press!. For single cups there's something called an Aeropress that I absolutely love!. But how you make it isn't as important as using fresh coffee, grinding just before brewing, and so forth!.
