I had the opportunity to have a Chateau d'Yquem sauternes a couple of years ago, I can't remember what the exact vintage was, but it was from the late seventies or early eighties!. I think the market price on the half-bottle was something in the $200 range (maybe $180!?)!. It's been a while, so I'm a little fuzzy on the exact details!.
The stuff was out-of-sight!. I can't describe how good it was!. I mean, I think it actually lived up to the hype!. I don't know if I'll ever have the chance to drink anything better as long as I live!.
That said, it's probably not worth it!. I mean, there's a lot of other stuff that one can buy for 200 dollars!. I guess it's worth it if you're incredibly rich or if you value wine over anything else -- but it's not very practical!.
In short, there are way too many really, really good $10-$20 in the world for me to spend much time thinking about the few times I've had exceptionally expensive wines!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

This is so difficult to answer!. I have had good bottles that are in the $15-20 range and have had bottles that are hundreds!. With wine on a standard basis, exceptions excluded, what you get is what you pay for!. If you really enjoy they are worth it!.
Personally I enjoy the red wines!. The french and Italians make some great wines!. St!. Emillion, Languedoc, medoc, San giovese, and even Chiati are great grapes!.
Good Luck!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
