Answers:
Alcohol is taxed but not as much as tobacco!.

I think it has something to do wit "backlash" from the fiasco that happened in prohibition!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The taxation of tobacco is due to the American public vilifying smokers!. There has been so much bad publicity against smoking and smokers, that the government knows this will never get overturned or voted against by the people!.

While smoking may cause cancer, that is the smokers freedom to do so!. Second hand smoke has yet to be proven to have any effect on people, even after 25 years of study!. Smoking while pregnant is probably not good for the fetus, but has yet to be scientifically proven either!. But most people believe this, so they think smokers are evil, so they are for this tax!.

Even though alcohol kills more people (cancer/dui and other stupidity), more people look upon that with less hatred because it does not cause any "second hand" harm!.

I would not be surprised if there is a giant cell phone tax hike as well, since everyone wants to blame poor driving on cell phones instead of the fact that over 60% of drivers cannot pass the CA DMV test!. Who knows how many cannot read the signs, since they are all in english, yet you can take the DMV test in spanish!.

"Why tax both!?
Why don't we just tax one and not the other!?"

They increased the tax on tobacco by 259%!. That is insane!.
If they did that to everyone's alcohol, heads would roll and the politicians know it!.

With tobacco, it has been so vilified, that many are happy that this tax increase was put into effect because they personally don't like it!. This is dangerous thinking, because if they do this with tobacco, what is next!? Something you like, but others don't!. Alcohol!? Cell phones!? Video games!? Junk food!? Fast food!?

It is horrible that this has happened, and I guarantee it will not stop there!. We are marching away from capitalism and toward Marxism!. The government should not push free people or free enterprise in how they spend money, by law or by insanely high tax hikes!. That is all this is, trying to stop free people from making free choices!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Thats my own personal conspiracy theory =]

Not to mention why the US federal government, and my shitty state of California are both crying about how they want to help the poor and economically troubled, yet made the highest tax hikes in history!. Obama and Arnold are both economic rapists!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I've worked in the alcohol business for over a decade and I can tell you first hand that alcohol is taxed at a MUCH higher rate than tobacco - the final consumer just never really knows about it because the government is very sneaky!.!.!. there's a nasaty little thing called EXCISE TAX that damn near breaks our backs (as small brewers)!.
I won't even get into the health benefits of alcohol, or the fact that it was the catalyst for the formation of society as we know it!.

Cheers!Www@FoodAQ@Com
